The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned President Muhammadu Buhari that if he declares Friday, May 26, 2023, a public holiday in order to prevent the Supreme Court from delivering its verdict on the disqualification case of Kashim Shettima, the Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), it could lead to problems and conflicts in the country. The Supreme Court has already set that date for the judgment.
The main opposition party has called on the President and his administration to address concerns about reports of a planned public holiday. They also want the government to clarify allegations that the ruling party is pressuring the Department of State Services to advise the President to declare the holiday. The opposition party expressed worry about the government's silence, which is causing tension and could lead to a crisis if not dealt with promptly. They accused the ruling party of insensitivity, manipulation, abuse of power, and improper governance. The opposition party urged the President to alleviate the growing tension by making a clear statement about the reported plans to disrupt the Supreme Court proceedings by declaring a public holiday. They highlighted that Nigerians are eager for the court's judgment on a case involving a politician's disqualification for violating electoral laws.

The APC needs to respect the independence of the Judiciary and the Supreme Court when it comes to carrying out justice, as stated in the Nigerian Constitution. It's also important to uphold the Principle of Separation of Powers, which is part of the Constitution. Nigeria is already under a lot of pressure, and if there's an attempt to declare a public holiday on Friday, May 26, 2023, with the intention of preventing the Supreme Court from giving its decision, it could make the situation worse and have serious consequences for the country.
